Infant Steps: Fighting Temptations

Beloved EROLyrics Readers,

Hope your week has started out greatly. Covenant grace and peace be to you in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior, who reigns forevermore.

Today’s question on the Infant Steps Series is from me to you. It is about fighting temptations. You can read one of my experiences with temptation here and my analogy of temptation with the forbidden fruit.

Temptations can come to challenge your strength as a child of God, challenge your beliefs and integrity, or to make you feel you are not good enough.

My question is, "Have you ever found yourself in a situation where the temptation seemed to overwhelm you yet you were able to overcome? If yes, what did you do? What made you not to give in?" Your experience does not have to be as "you know" as mine...:-)

Thank you,

Rita.

I've found myself tempted in so many instances. Especially while in a relationship with my boyfriend. When we first started dating we were lukewarm Christians...you know we partied on Saturday and went to church on Sunday, while being half asleep.

About a yr and a half into our relationship we became workers at church and re-dedicated our lives to Christ. And that's when the struggle began...btw doing what's right and having a pure relationship and going back to our old ways.

With time, the holy spirit convicted us regularly and we made up our minds to wait until marriage, it was a tough decision but with time the guilt and shame disappeared and God's name was glorified!

The spirit is always willing...but the flesh is weak. We couldn't have done it with our own strength, it was def the grace of God.

I have been in that position a couple of times... I guess the time I am able to overcome are the times when I am meditating on scripture or basically just singing a worship song or something... i always try to align myself with his perfect will...

When I try, I find myself resisting the urge to do something.. He is with me so He helps me deal with the temptations

Yes.

If yes, what did you do?
I removed myself immediately from the temptation. The reason we fall is because most times we aren't thinking. so i literally walked out of the library ....

What made you not to give in?"
The knowledge that after it is all said and done, i would feel like crap.

I have been helped as appreciating that I had been forgiven before for the very thing that was tempting me; my Lord had suffered for me in that very thing -so how could i return to it.

And, of course, we depend on the Holy Spirit; we can cry to Him.

We've all faced temptations but thanks to the Holy Spirit that directs us. If we listen to Him, we'll overcome because Christ has overcome for us. Also God our father will not give us that we cannot bear.

I hadn't read your own story of resisting temptation before, Rita, and I found it to be a very strong witness.

I'm very thankful for your answered prayer and for your best friend, who became your husband! How lovely.

yeahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! for the first time in history, i came in a list of someone's top commenters. hip hip hip, hurray.

i face a lot of temptations each day. first are boys, they tempt me, but they are actually the easiest to overcome right now. second, i am always tempted to skip classes, or skip church or fellowship, i yield to temptation most times but other times, i just keep saying to myself 'i am soooooo going to be in fellowship this evening'.

third and mightiest temptation is the one that says 'don't pay your tithe, or your partnership or some money for church' i am always tempted to use my tithe and buy textbooks or novels, and say 'God would understand'. i resist the temptation by going to my church office to give the tithe instead of waiting for sunday, but most times too, i yield to that temptation.

I understand the temptation of not wanting to pay your tithes. I go through that all the time. It's not that I don't want to pay it per se; it's that I am so broke and I tell myself that I am only "borrowing" from God.

These days, I just pay the tithe immediately before I even have the chance to borrow it. That way, it's out of my hands.

I'm also tempted to say certain things. They may be funny, but they're 'trash talk,' It's very, very hard for me to resist the urge to say those things because I know they're so darn funny. But then I know that even if everyone else laughs, God would do everything but laugh.
