The Pedicure

Before I start, please permit me to digress, but not too much.

Sometime last week I saw someone. He was waving at me frantically. I knew the face was familiar but I could not trace it. We spoke. He sounded well-educated (if there is anything like that). Did we go to the same school? I wondered. I appraised him. He was dressed neatly, looking smart like a guy heading for a fruitful date. I did not say anything concerning the fact that I could not place his face. Then after the brief discussion he said, “Okay, good night Aunty Rita!” There are only few places where I am addressed as Aunty Rita. Suddenly I could place his face. He was a security guard in our office. I only saw him in the uniforms opening and closing the gate. I said to myself, “I should never judge people by what they do or the clothes they wear.”

*******************************************************

He sat on the chair while I washed his feet. With gentle massages and selected foot treatments, I brought his dirty feet to a state he could never imagine. But the thirty minutes of soaking, scrubbing, massaging, nail trimming and washing his feet was a moment of reflection.

He was once a baby I tended. I washed his diapers, made sure he ate at the right time, sucked his catarrh (ewww!!), and carried him on my back while I went about doing my household chores. My back or my bosom was his first place of sleep before he would later be laid in a cot. Now he’s a grown boy, playing football in the dirtiest places, and mature enough to make decisions for himself and the family.

I was seated at a lower position in order to get the pedicure done. It looked like a Master and Servant scenerio. But I was not washing his feet because he had ordered me to do so. I was not washing his feet because he could pay me to do it. I was not washing his feet because I owed him a favor. I was not washing his feet because he could not do it himself.

I did it because I love him (and of course, the feet were dirty!)

I was not less of a person by washing his feet. I was sure of whom I was and the act could not take it from me. As I slowly wiped his feet, I had to recall when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. He was still the Son of God yet he humbled himself. He was secure in who He was.

“How do you like your feet now?” I asked him when I was done with the pedicure.
“Are these my feet?” he asked humorously.
I was okay with the joy and appreciation in his eyes. That made my evening.

As he walked away, tiptoeing like he did not want his feet to touch the ground, my spirit concurred with my thoughts, “I am not great because of what I do. I am great because of who I am: Your child made in Your image, in whom You reside.”

And I echo this to you, “You are not great because of what you do (or do not do). You are great because of who you are: A child of God made in His image, in whom He resides.”

The story of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet is based on John 13:1-17.

My Sacrifice of Praise

Today I bring my Sacrifice of Praise
Now knowing why it is named that way
First because it is taking so much of me
And secondly I see no reason to give it;
But I bring to your Throne of Grace
This my Sacrifice of Praise
With thanksgiving in my lips
And joy from within;

I bless you for yesterday and today
I glorify you for your ways are not my ways
I exalt you for there is none like you
And worship you for there is nothing else to do;
May the world and its rulers hear my Sacrifice of Praise
Which I give you in this time and place
My soul waits patiently, my expectation is from you only
For I trust you and believe in you, My King of Glory.

The Inspiration
Everyday is not about good news. Life has its good times and bad times. No matter who you are, you are not exempted from the realities of life. Often we sympathize with people when they are involved in rough or sad situations. Sometimes we personally feel what others are going through, so we empathize. But what happens when you are the person involved? What happens when you are the subject of sympathy?

On one beautiful afternoon I decided to go swimming. Then I received some very bad news (I’d share this with you in one of my novels yet to be published). I tried to be strong. For a moment I was in shock. I shed no tears. There was no point. I had made a resolution in my moment of shock – when I get to the pool, I’d drown myself since there is no reason to live! I made a few calls to those dear to me, told them how much I loved them, and then took my things with me to the pool. I gave myself some good 5 minutes of “the last tears” then got into the water.

Then HE said, “In every thing give thanks, for this is MY Will in Christ Jesus concerning you”.
I replied, “I have no reason to give thanks, please leave me alone let me go about my suicide mission. How can I hear this kind of news and you want me to go on?”
HE simply reminded me of Deuteronomy 28 that started thus, “If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today…” I did not want to be disobedient. Grudgingly I left the pool, went to a quiet corner and started praising and worshipping HIM. That was when I understood what sacrifice of praise meant. With time I started enjoying some of the words in the songs (from my phone because on my own I may not have remembered any) and I found myself praising HIM joyfully. I must confess that it did not remove the truth of what had happened or stop the heart-breaking hurt in my heart. But I had an assurance that God was with me, as always, and HE’d help me through this phase.

It is not easy to Praise God during rough times, but it is possible. God is a Restorer. HE is a Healer. HE is a Provider. HE is God. The devil has come to steal (our joy and rights), to kill and to destroy, but thank God that Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly [John 10:10].

Take a journey down memory lane. Recall the role of God in your life. You’d see that HE is always there. HE is here for you, now and forever more.

Nothing can separate you from the Love of God. Remain Blessed.

Your Awesome Love - Lyrics for the Song

Your Awesome Love
Come’ from above
Inside my whole
You make your home
Amazing Love
Anew each morn
Keeps me going on
Leaving no void

Your Awesome Love (There is nothing like it)
Come’ from above (Can’t do without it)
Inside my whole (There you inhabit)
You make your home (And show me what love is)
Amazing Love (That’s what I’m feeling)
Anew each morn (That’s why I’m singing)
Keeps me going on (That’s why I’m living)
Leaving no void (That’s why I’m complete)

It comes from Jesus, Jesus, Sweet Jesus
It’s because of Jesus, Jesus, Sweet Jesus

I call your name (You’re right beside me)
I seek your face (You’re right before me)
I face each day (You’re right behind me)
With Your Amazing Grace (You’re all I really need)
And in the dark (I fear no evil)
Light floods my path (Enough for the next inch)
Joy fills my heart (Filled with thanksgiving)
New songs I have (Of fresh testimonies)

It comes from Jesus, Jesus, Sweet Jesus
It’s because of Jesus, Jesus, Sweet Jesus

Your Awesome Love (There is nothing like it)
Come’ from above (Can’t do without it)
Inside my whole (There you inhabit)
You make your home (And show me what love is)
Amazing Love (That’s what I’m feeling)
Anew each morn (That’s why I’m singing)
Keeps me going on (That’s why I’m living)
Leaving no void (That’s why I’m complete)

Your Awesome Love (There is nothing like it)
Come’ from above (Can’t do without it)
Inside my whole (There you inhabit)
You make your home (And show me what love is)
Eternal Love (There is no one like You)
You’re all I want (Cant do without You)
I Love you Lord (None loves me like you do)
Forever more (That’s why love you)

Sing last verse till fade…

The Inspiration
I was on an early morning flight. No book to read, no music to listen to, forgot the words I should be meditating on (don’t blame me too much. I thought I had understood it when I rushed through it that early morning. It had to do with freshness and I remember the bible passage was in Romans. I must have been thinking of other things as usual. So much for understanding). As the plane began to take off, HE said, “I’m taking you to a new level (in your life), higher than you can imagine.” And I replied (imagining that the new level was in the air), “Well, let me get some sleep. Wake me up when we get there!”

As I laid back and closed my eyes, I started humming a tune. I tried to remember which song I was singing but I hadn’t heard it before. I tried putting words to it but all I could sing was “Amazing Love”. HE urged me to write it even if it was two words but I wanted to sleep so I told HIM to leave me to rest. Then HE reminded me that by the time I sleep, wake up, get to work, think about all the things HE won’t have me thinking, I would have forgotten there was a tune not to mention words. Since I feel bad when I forget an inspiration I opened my eyes and started writing in my pocket jotter. And voila! We have the lyrics for “Your Awesome Love”. These lyrics are for the next No 1 Hit.

I have had inspirations for several songs in both my life as a sinner and a believer. If not that I now believe that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and I am what HE says I am, I would have said that I can’t sing. When I told him “Lord, you know I don’t sing, why give me a song?” HE replied, “One of your callings is to write so write what I tell you to write. It does not have to come in the ways you are familiar with.” Then HE reminded me of Moses who stammered and Aaron who assisted him. HE said to me, "Just do what I say you should do. I have given you all it takes to do it. Where I know you will need help, I will send help to you."

Message for YOU Today…
Forget your limitations today and focus on your strengths. HE wants you to use what HE has given you to glorify HIM. Do what HE wants you to do. Do not fear to ask for help where you are not strong. And believe me, when you do what HE says you should do with what HE has given you, HE will help you in those areas where you think you lack.

Have a blessed day.
